They overcame a season of numerous injuries and other issues to finish first in the East Region for the fourth time in a row. The team carry's an overall GPA of 3.3. Several of our Sophomore players are going on to continue their education and playing careers at four year institutions. You, we have a lot to be proud of for what you've accomplished this year, congratulations. You had a great run and there are a lot of other players, coaches, parents and institutions who wish they could have been as successful as you have been

Baseballs season also ended at the Regional playoffs. The Knights lost their first game to Treasure Valley one to two, won their second game against Blue Mountain six to one and lost on Saturday to Treasure Valley again seven tow zero to end their chances for a return to the NWAACC championships. Our Knights Baseball team also had a great season. For a team that was dominated by freshmen they were very competitive, finishing second in the East Region and having another winning season as well.

Fastpitch All Stars Announced

Congratulations to our 2009 Fastpitch All-Stars. Slugging pitcher Ranzy York followed with a deep fly to centerfield that was overrun and misplayed at the fence, and she ended up on second base after scoring Keffler. Miranda Rosebrook, the team’s leading hitter, then ripped an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Meanwhile, cleanup hitter Rachael Glaspie anxiously awaited her turn.
“We had two outs, but I just knew she was going to get on,” Glaspie said of Rosebrook.
After falling behind in the count with two strikes, Glaspie sent a high flyball to center.
“When I got up, I was thinking, ‘Just a line drive in the gap, and she’s gonna score — hands up, and drive through,’ “ Glaspie said. “As soon as I hit it, I knew I hit it hard enough, but I hit it high.”
But it cleared the fence. Game over. And WVC coach Shelly Pflugrath wasn’t surprised.
“There’s no quit in them,” Pflugrath said. “It’s not the first time they’ve done it. That’s the product of hard work and confidence.”
Rosebrook finished 3-for-4, and Glaspie 2-for-3. They and York had WVC’s only hits in the game.
The Knights may have used up their ration of mojo for the day in the opener, as the breaks went the wrong way late in the game against Olympic, one of few teams in the tournament the Knights hadn’t seen yet this season.
WVC took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Ashley Gustin hit and RBI single and Laurel Wyatt later scored on a wild pitch by Olympic pitcher Erika Quint. But that was one of very few mistakes by Quint, who was otherwise dominant in an 11-strikeout effort. She had no walks, and hit just one batter.
Still, Knights’ starter Bri Compton was having a nice game of her own. Compton took a shutout into the seventh inning, having allowed just four baserunners to that point.
Then things began to unravel.
Olympic’s Natalie PaePae led off the seventh with a double. The next batter, Keri Leaverton, laid down a bunt that was fielded by WVC third baseman Jocelyn Slack, who properly looked PaePae back to second but never went back for the out at first base.
“We made a wrong choice on the bunt and didn’t get the out at one, then they got a double and it changed the inning,” Pflugrath said.
Controversy reared its ugly head three batters later, the score tied at 2-2 with two outs.
Olympic’s Carolyn Ebendo hit a routine grounder to Wyatt — a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American — at short, but baserunner Megan Kreifels never diverged from her course between second and third. The ball appeared to nick Kreifels’ foot, and Kreifels appeared to make contact with Wyatt as she bent down to scoop up the ball. Instead, the ball squirted under Wyatt’s glove and into the shallow outfield. The go-ahead run scored.
“She hit me — that’s all I have to say,” Wyatt said.
Pflugrath argued the play for several minutes to no avail — on both counts.
“Either way, that’s a dead-ball (out) and the run doesn’t score,” Pflugrath said.
Neither umpire would comment after running off the field immediately following the game.
Despite the loss, the East Region champion Knights can still win the NWAACC title in the double-elimination tournament, but they have a lot of ground to make up in the consolation bracket on Saturday, when they could play as many as three games, all in loser-out status.
Pflugrath said she’s confident her team can do it. She added that the bizarre loss won’t have any lingering effects on her or her team.
“It won’t change how we come to the ballpark tomorrow,” she said.

WVC Baseball - All on the line

Knights beat Walla Walla on walk-off slam, then fall to CBC
NWAACC baseball tournament: All on the line

By Brent Stecker
World sports writer
Posted May 17, 2008

Columbia Basin's Brady Farrington runs back to his dugout after tagging Wenatchee Valley College's Zane Bator to end the third inning of their regional playoff game Friday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Field in Wenatchee. (World photo/Don Seabrook)

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley College Knights breezed through the regular season. Now they're trying to catch their breath in the playoffs.

Edward Rodriguez

Three errors and pitching woes cost the top-seeded Knights in an 11-7 loss to Columbia Basin in the second round of Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East Region tournament play Friday at Paul Thomas Stadium. WVC opened the tournament with a dramatic 8-5 win over Walla Walla that was capped off by a mammoth walk-off grand slam by Edward Rodriguez, but the loss to the Hawks leaves them in a must-win situation to keep their season alive.

"We weren't ready to play the second game," Wenatchee Valley coach Rusty Keith said. "(Columbia Basin) flat outplayed us."

The Knights must beat Treasure Valley in a noon contest Saturday to clinch a spot in next week's NWAACC tournament in Longview. The winner of that game will play Columbia Basin at 3 p.m. to determine the two seeds from the region. If Columbia Basin loses, the two teams will meet again at noon Sunday.

After defeating Treasure Valley earlier in the day, Columbia Basin came out firing on all cylinders against the Knights. Thanks to four hits, one walk and a Wenatchee Valley error, the Hawks pushed across five runs in the first inning.

The WVC pitching staff couldn't cool off the Columbia Basin hitters, and the Hawks ended up scoring at least one run in five different innings.

"We just walked too many guys and weren't able to throw first-pitch strikes," Keith said. "It just seems like every time we make a mistake there are runners on (base). They took advantage of that and that's a credit to them." On the bright side, the Knights did some damage on offense themselves and pounded out 13 hits in the game.

Center fielder Curran Redal went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to lead WVC. Seth Anderson was 3-for-4 and Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The main source of trouble for the Knights was Tyler Reeves, Columbia Basin's leadoff man. The pesky second baseman went 2-for-3, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, scored four runs and drove in another.

WVC 8, Walla Walla 5

With the Knights trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth with one out and the bases loaded, Rodriguez proved how clutch he is by walloping a walk-off grand slam to keep Wenatchee Valley in the winner's bracket.

Warrior closer Jacob Hiatt took the ball in the last inning, but he appeared to be off his game from the start and issued a walk to Bracken Howerton.

Tyler Slesk bunted him over to second, and Redal legged out a dribbler along the third base line to put runners on the corners.

Joe Intermill drew a walk to load the bases, and Rodriguez worked the count to 2-2 by fouling off a few pitches before depositing a Hiatt offering over the wall in left-center field.

"I was just trying to clear my hands and he made a mistake," Rodriguez said.

"I don't think he could have got (that pitch) any more than he got it," Keith said.

The hard-hitting catcher said the Knights fed off each other in the last inning.

"It seemed like the momentum was up real high," he said. "You have the support of each other and people are counting you. When you get up you just have to do your job and get a hit."

Wenatchee Valley trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Redal and Intermill each singled and Rodriguez walked with two outs. Zane Bator then ripped a double down the line to score two runs.

Howerton added an RBI single in the sixth to give WVC a 4-2 lead, but an error on a sacrifice bunt play in the eighth brought in two runs for the Warriors, and Michael Tompkins brought in a third with a groundout to put them back in the lead.

Redal and Intermill were each 2-for-5, while Howerton was 2-for-4. Intermill scored two runs while Redal, who will play for the Wenatchee AppleSox this summer, scored once.

Southpaw Zach Swart was solid on the mound, striking our four and allowing five runs (four earned) in seven innings.

Jeff Denton allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to get the win for Wenatchee Valley.

WVC Softball — York powers Knights to key sweep

PENDLETON, Ore. — If it's possible, Ranzy York just keeps getting better.

By Eric Gordon
World sports writer
Posted May 03, 2008

The Wenatchee Valley College softball team's ace hurler was on target in the circle and productive at the plate in a 6-3, 2-0 sweep of a tough Blue Mountain squad Friday in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader.

"She plays with a lot of confidence," WVC coach Shelly Pflugrath said. "And whatever you ask her to do, she does."

York pitched all 14 innings of the two games, with a combined 15 strikeouts and just two walks.

She blew away the first three Blue Mountain batters of the first game swinging, then set down six more on strikes over the next six innings.

She helped her own cause with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, driving in a run.

Also in the opener, Miranda Rosebrook went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Rachael Glaspie added two hits, and Jocelyn Slack scored and drove in a run.

Surprisingly, Blue Mountain coach Tom Bequette saved ace pitcher Ashley Densmore for the nightcap, and she was tough. Densmore allowed WVC just three hits.

"I think he was kind of thinking he'd get a split, that he would get somebody else (for an opposing pitcher) and not knowing he was going to get York again," Pflugrath said.

But the three hits proved to be enough.

York supplied two of them, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning that accounted for all the game's scoring.

Laurel Wyatt had the other WVC hit.

The second win of the day for York was also her 20th of the season, just three off her own school-record set last year.

She has pitched WVC's last 28 innings of play, also including a huge doubleheader sweep of Walla Walla last weekend that put the Knights in first place in the NWAACC East.

Despite York's increased workload of late, Pflugrath said she's not concerned.

"She threw the final 12 games of the year for us last year and still won three games at the (NWAACC) tournament," Pflugrath said.

Even after WVC's impressive wins Friday afternoon, good news for the team just kept pouring in throughout the evening.

First, the Knights learned that Walla Walla and Spokane, tied for second in the East, split their double dip on Friday.

That puts WVC (21-4 division, 36-9 overall) a full two games ahead of both in the standings with four to play. (By the way, WVC is possibly just four games away from setting a school record for wins for a third-straight season with 40).

Then, the NWAACC polls were released, announcing the Knights are ranked No. 2 in the entire 27-team conference.
